I've read some specs where it's said to go as high as 110-140mph... well i took it on the highway and on a real long flat stretch on a mild day with no wind, and had it going beyond the 240km mark about where 250km would be marked down as fairly quickly... which is around 155mph and it still felt like i was accelerating (slowly at this point) before I let down on the throttle to save some tread on my soft tires.

Hmmm? The bike is all stock and broke in very well with now over 10k KM's on it.

Is this the norm? No wind + I was laying on the tank. No cargo on board, and im about 180lbs.

Let me be the first to say..........

    205 m.p.h. :lol3

Seriously, one of the commonly reported 'issues' with V-stroms is their notoriously optimistic speedometers. Somewhere around here are some threads where folks compared their indicated speed to a GPS, and found, IIRC, as much as 10% error.

  3. On the ride back from Reno Rally, 4700 rpm, 90 mph on speedo, 78 mph gps.
  4. Uhhh, the bike is all stock? It is my understanding that all DL1000's are "governed" to 125 mph. This is done with a set of secondary butterfly valves to prevent an "instability" issue at higher speeds.

My bike has been modded, runs pipes off a Power Commander and burns right through 135 mph indicated. I imagine it would top out at an actual 145 or so (160 mph indicated) if given enough room.

I agree about the optomistic speedo... all my past bikes have been off right at 8.5%. This bike seems to be a bit more off, as indicated by my seat-of-the-pants-o-meter.

It felt totally stable to me, but it was not loaded or running with bags.

I can run out tonight with the GPS and give you the real scoop if you are really all that interested. :evil You gotta love living out in the desert.

Get a Speedo Healer and dial in you Speedometer... in the range of $80.

Don't you hate having the speedo off so much? I always do.

OH! maybe this is why i been getting by so many cops going 20-30km over the speed limit haha. (knock on wood i hope saying this didnt jinx me).

But yeah, as far as I know it's all stock. I got a deal on the bike at the dealership since one of the salesman took it for a 6k ride to do a review for it. Not sure if he adjusted anything or not. But wow is it ever broke in good.

But yeah, if you do the gps thing, that would be great, just don't hurt yourself or the bike!

  7. Had a speedo-healer on my last bike; A Kawasaki Zx-12R. Ran about a $110 from SoCalSportbike right up the hill in Wrightwood. Had it calibrated with radar to +/- 1 mph, but the most fun was the "speed recall" button feature.

Had fun chasing it's speed limiter (at 186), but wanted to switch gears mentally and get back to the basic fun of riding an all 'round bike and live a little longer to enjoy it all.

I have to say I've backed it off several notches and don't really sweat the speedometer that much anymore.

I do however, hate speedo's that are off. Especially on old fat guys. :puke1

  8. No problem. Used to do this sort of thing quite often. But, then again, the 12 would run well over 130 in just the 1/4 mile.

It's a bit hot and breezy out right now. I'll post up later tonight once it cools and calms a bit.

It won't hurt the bike. It's geared so tall that I seriously doubt it would hit redline in 6th, tuned and all.

I purchased my bike used, and was also shocked to find out that it had it's governer removed. Though I should have expected it, as it came with Two Brothers Pipes, the Power Commander and a dyno sheet which said 97 Hp.

I'll let you know how it turns out. Or if I need bail money. :eek1

  9. In sixth gear, with the V35 bags on and a Touring Lip, mine will only pull about 7,000 rpm. I was at 130 indicated, so about 120.

    Two up...I've seen 130 indicated.
  11. OK, here are the numbers;

2800 ft. - 80 deg - light confused breeze - stock tires and windscreen in the middle position, just ducking out of the wind, not all tucked in or laid out or anything.

60 mph indicated is 56 mph actual (per GPS) so, not as big of an error factor as I would have thought. About average.

The real deal; It runs out to exactly 130 actual speed, indicating a bit over 140. That comes up at about 8800 RPM in 5th gear. Slip it into 6th and it noses over. Too much of an overdrive so it won't hold that mph and slowly falls away.

*Testing performed on private property on a closed course, do not attempt to duplicate these numbers on a public roadway.

  12. I think that's a legit number. I rode a friend's DL a few days ago and it moved quite sprightly to an indicated 120 and then started climbing at a slower pace, and I'm built like 4x8 sheet of plywood standing straight up. Not exactly slipping through the wind. Lots of grunt. I was impressed. It's a keeper, but gee those bars suck.
  13. Never got to try the stock bars. Came with a Moose brand style "Fat Bar".

Just put on some Acerbis handguards and farkled up some ricy running lights that I'll post pics of later tonight.

It just keeps impressing me everytime I swing a leg over it.

  14. I've had mine up to 115 mph indicated. I'm sure I wasn't going much over 100 mph actual. Seems fast enough to me. My busa does all the speed runs:D

You must do at least 120 for Allah to bless you with Virgins!
  18. Gotta try that downhill :lol3 or wait for the hurricane season
  19. Mine always feels "flighty" anywhere over 110 or so, must be the bodywork. I save the high speed stuff for the track!
